Once again, the time has come to name the Knez Mihailova Apartments Belgrade Top 5. For those of you acquainted with previous lists (you can check out the 2014 and 2015, respectively), we can say that this year’s list is nowhere nearly as exciting. Things have changed, except for the most important one: ALDO still champions the list.
The landscape surrounding Knez Mihailova street has changed in the past year.
City authorities have finally embraced a thirty-year-old plan for urban development of this prime area of Belgrade, and one more street that used to be open for traffic has now been pedestrianized. A thing that they failed to take into account was the fact that the actual expansion of the pedestrian area was supposed to be a consequence of the arrival of the subway into this part of town. As the costly development of the underground got stuck in 1995, we are are inclined to believe that the officials have an unusual appreciation of hipster subculture Same goes for the fountain that was envisioned by the plan – it also sprung up. Its design and appearance were indeed appealing in the 1980s, but today seem like a part of a distinctly Kafkaesque metamorphosis of the city’s outward appearance. Given the state of the facades of the surrounding buildings, it becomes even more absurd.
The shopping mall at the far end of street is still under construction, which renders some of the apartments in its close surroundings less appealing. (so bear this in mind if you want to book OLD TOWN). Another entry in this years list is VEGAS, which belongs to a mini-hotel. But it has a Jacuzzi and after ALDO, it is the closest one to Knez Mihailova street.
Some apartments that did not appear here deserve honorable mentions: HUGO and EDEN. In spite of their other qualities, they do not quite fit into the image of prestige that Knez Mihaiova has. The number of apartments in the close surroundings of Knez Mihailova has finally reached the point at which we had to group them on a single, dedicated page.
Is there an apartment that will get ALDO off the throne?
Well, we’ll see that, next year.
Until then, we wholeheartedly recommend those that appeared here. The chances of going wrong with any of these apartments are very slim.
